At Formed For, every sculpture begins with an intention—and ends in a form that is both timeless and deeply human. We believe that art is not just what is seen, but what is felt through presence, precision, and process. Below, we offer a detailed look into how each piece comes to life—from first sketch to final signature.
Our Design Process
Each sculpture begins as a dialogue between Gavin and Kelley—a shared exploration of mood, shape, and meaning. These conversations take form in hand-drawn sketches, where natural patterns, architectural lines, and symbolic gestures are distilled into early visual concepts. These initial sketches serve as the emotional core of the work.
From there, we build a digital 3D model using advanced design tools, which allows us to:
- Refine every curve, angle, and negative space
- Explore variations in material and surface treatment
- Simulate how the sculpture will interact with light and environment
- Place the work in virtual settings using VR to fine-tune scale and spatial relationship
Once the design is complete, we often create a 3D printed prototype to study the form in physical space. This tactile step allows us to make intuitive adjustments that digital tools alone cannot reveal.
Fabrication with Integrity
We collaborate with a global network of master artisans, each selected for their specific expertise. Sometimes, a single studio completes every aspect of a sculpture. Other times, we divide the work across specialists: for example, structural fabrication in one country, and finishing or patina in another.
Every artisan we work with becomes an extension of our studio. We remain closely involved throughout the entire process:
- Providing detailed specs, materials, and finishes
- Reviewing progress through photos and video
- Giving feedback and direction at each milestone
- Approving final touchpoints, surface treatments, and mounting details
No piece leaves the studio or workshop without our full approval. We take pride in executing each work at the highest standard of craftsmanship.
Limited Editions
Each sculpture we create is part of a strictly limited edition, never exceeding eleven sculptures from a single original model. This includes artist’s proofs and prototypes. We believe in the rarity and integrity of our work. Limiting the edition size ensures each piece retains its value, uniqueness, and connection to the original artistic intent. Once the edition is complete, no additional sculptures are made, and molds are archived or retired.
Certificate of Authenticity
Each sculpture is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity, signed by both artists. This document serves as official verification of origin, authorship, and edition number.
